GW Speech & Debate Team Wins National Award
GW's Speech & Debate Team received the National Forensics League's School of Excellence award at a national tournament that was held June 13-18 in Kansas City. The GW team was one of seventeen of the 935 competing schools to receive the award (for having the most debaters competing in elimination rounds).
The Public Forum team of Gabe Neslin and Lawson Williams took 9th place. The CX(Cross Examination) Policy Debate Team of Sam Clark and Miles Owen placed in the top 60, and Miles Owen placed in the Top 14 Individual Debaters. Gabe Rusk and Brendan Patrick placed in the top 30 teams in Public Forum Debate, and Madelaine Czufin and Chase Kernan also placed in the top 60 CX/Policy Debate Teams.
Other GWHS competitors included Angie Neslin (Original Oratory), Dan Morgan-Russell (International Extemporaneous Speaking), Matt Zavislan, (Lincoln-Douglas Debate), Ryan Boyd and Emma Thompson (Congress).
George's speech and debate program, coached by Maryrose Kohan, has grown from ten students five years ago to over 100 members in the last school year. The 2009-2010 team included twenty-five state qualifying students.
GWIB Swimmer makes All-Colorado Team
Ben Holston was named to the All-Colorado team for Boys H.S. Swimming, as well as the Class 5A team for Boys Swimming. Swimmers are named to the team for having the fastest time in the state in their event, and Ben won the 500 yard freestyle at the 5A state championships this year. Dan Jurgs (Class of 2010) received Honorable Mention. [ DENVER POST ]
Congratulations Class of 2010 — Job Well Done
One-hundred percent of George IB's seniors were admitted to four-year colleges or universities (continuing the program's perfect record). Sixty percent will go to schools outside of Colorado.

IB Senior's Essay Published in The Concord Review
IB senior Neal Feldman has been notified by The Concord Review that his IB Extended Essay will be published in the Summer (June) 2010 issue. The thesis for Neal’s extended essay, “The Balkan Wars, 1912-1913”, was “To what extent did the Ottoman defeat in the Balkan Wars contribute to its ultimate collapse at the end of World War I?” Since 1987, The Concord Review has published over 900 history research papers on a wide variety of historical topics by high school students in thirty-six countries. This quarterly is the only one in the world for the publication of academic work of secondary students. Neal’s extended essay advisor was Bonnie Guggenheim. Neal will be attending the University of Denver, on scholarship, in the fall.
