IB Student Information - CAS

Updated on April 8, 2008

CAS (Creativity, Action and Service)

All juniors and seniors should have received a portfolio to keep track of all CAS hours. All students must complete 150 hours of Creativity, Action and Service during their junior and senior years. In the spirit of CAS, students will also participate in Peer Reflection. All students must complete a CAS Worksheet for each activity, obtain original supervisor signatures and put sheets into your portfolios. There will be periodic checks to keep you on track. You also must keep a log of your hours.

Freshmen Service Day — April 23, 2008

The IB CAS Board has planned a CAS Service Day for all ninth-grade Pre-IB students on Wednesday, April 23, 2008. Your student will not attend class that day; instead, s/he will participate in a CAS project.

The CAS component of IB recognizes the importance of addressing the whole student, educating him/her through self-discovery and personal growth in addition to academic rigor. Students are challenged to learn about themselves and expand their personal growth through creative, action, and service-based experiences. Our goal this year is to offer our students an opportunity to spend a day in the worthwhile pursuit of what IB describes as “developing awareness, concern, and the ability to work cooperatively with others” within the context of stewardship of natural community resources.

We have chosen to work with the Denver Department of Parks & Recreation’s Natural Areas Program. The stated mission of the Natural Areas Program is “to protect and restore natural open space that still exists as well as to nurture natural ecological processes to encourage long-term sustainability.” The entire Pre-IB freshman class will work outdoors to naturalize a portion of the landscape at the City of Chennai Park located at Iowa Avenue and South Quebec St.
