IB Counseling and College Selection

Updated on March 12, 2010

This page will keep you informed about important dates, activities, and meetings that are related to the college application process. It is extremely important for students to plan ahead so as not to miss deadlines and not to overwhelm faculty and administrators with last-minute requests which they may not be able to accommodate.

College Rep Visits at GW

College admissions representative visits will take place throughout the year, with the greatest concentration occurring during September and October. Juniors and Seniors, look for schedule updates in the Future Center and be certain to follow the correct procedures for obtaining passes from any classes that you might miss in order to meet with the reps. Be judicious in the number of sessions you attend, as you will not be excused from completing your class work.

Key Dates (download as a PDF)

August 5, Wednesday
7:00 – 9:00 PM
Colorado Convention Center

Colleges That Change Lives” College Fair (www.ctcl.com)
August 27 @ 2PM Ms. Geimer will meet with all Seniors to collect the following materials (as detailed in her e-mail to you this summer): your college application essay, the School Report Form from the Common Application, a list of three teachers who have agreed to write letters of recommendation for you, a resume/list of activities to give to those teachers, and a list of up to seven colleges to which you will apply.

October 1 CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE, required for aid/scholarship consideration at many private schools, becomes available for online filing. Submit at least 2 weeks before the first deadline.
October 5 PAY for IB exams. Make your check payable to GWHS, put “IB exams” in the memo line, and bring or mail it to Mrs. Geimer in the IB Office. If mailing, send a self-addressed stamped envelope for your receipt. Last year’s fees were $217-667, depending on the number of exams (1-6) taken in May; see fee schedule on web site under “Student Info.” Students who have submitted the Free and Reduced Lunch form are eligible for assistance with these fees; bring your confirmation letter to the IB Office.
October 8 Out of State College Night offered by College Fairs of Greater Denver (www.collegefairsdenver.org)

6:30 – 8:30 PM, J. F. Kennedy High School, Denver
October 10 Cherry Creek College Fair (In- and Out-of-State), offered by College Fairs of Greater Denver (www.collegefairsdenver.org). This is the largest of the college fairs, with many schools represented and a wide variety of workshops and information sessions for students and parents.

10:00 AM – 2:00 PM, Cherry Creek High School
October 12 GWHS will host a College Fair run by Colorado Day/Night College Fair
Programs. Evening sessions of this fair are offered at several metro area schools; see www.coloradocouncil.org.

9:00 – 10:30 AM
October 15-17 REGISTER for IB exams in the IB Office as directed. This second step is essential!
October 17 Juniors (and Sophomores who want a trial run) have the opportunity to take the PSAT/NMSQT (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) at GW. Registration is through the GW counseling office, not online. Alternatively the test is offered on Wednesday, October 15, but not at GW. Students will receive more information in school.
October 19 Deadline to submit Early Decision and Early Action application details to IB Office: completed half-sheet, addressed envelope, and postage for each EA/ED school; School Supplement form(s) if required, application fee/waiver (if a college wants it submitted with the school report).
October 28-30 Fall Break is a good time to complete college visits. If you MUST extend your trip to include October 26-27, please make prior arrangements with your teachers so you can stay current. Since school is not in session October 28-30, faculty will assume that Seniors will be using that week to complete any final revisions to their extended essays.
November 1 Deadline for Seniors to submit their portions of Early Decision and Early Action applications to many colleges. Check your selected schools’ timelines and requirements carefully.
November 30 Deadline to submit Regular and Rolling Decision application details to IB Office: completed half sheet, addressed envelope, and postage for each RD school; School Supplement form(s) if required, application fee/waiver (if a college wants it submitted with the school report). Complete your “Colleges to which I’m applying” list in Naviance.
January 1 Deadline for submitting Regular Decision applications to many colleges. Again, check your selected schools’ requirements carefully. Some schools have earlier deadlines if you want to be considered for scholarships. The FAFSA application becomes available online and should be completed by aid applicants and their parents ASAP.
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), required for aid/scholarship consideration at most colleges, becomes available online. Plan to have parents’ and student’s 2009 federal and state tax returns prepared (not necessarily submitted) as early as possible in January, to facilitate this process.
March 31 Virtually all college decisions are mailed or posted online by this date. Financial aid packages typically arrive simultaneously, or within a week of the acceptance.
April Notify the IB Office of your outcomes and of your final decision ASAP.
Late April State-mandated ACT testing for all Juniors. GW arranges registration and fees, and the test is administered during the school day. Please note that this version of the ACT does not include the optional Writing Test.
May 1 Deadline to respond to colleges that have offered you admission, with a confirmation deposit (typically $200-500) to your chosen school.
First Three Weeks of May IB exams. Schedule will be posted on the web site under the “Student Info” tab.
Late May 2010 Graduation – date TBA

Remember that numerous IB assessments are due September through March. A detailed schedule will be distributed early in the fall and will also be posted on the web site under “Student Info.” PLAN AHEAD!
